What do Lady Gaga, Tom Hanks, Kermit the Frog and President Barack Obama all have in common? They are all here to tell you that it gets better.
It Gets Better is an internet initiative put together to try and curb the number of LGBT teens taking their own lives due to homophobic bullying from their peers, by conveying the message via video that life improves and the pain will ease.
To say that the campaign is a global success is a severe understatement to the worldwide phenomenon that this has become. World leaders, celebrities and the LGBT community rallied together to post videos to the site which now boasts over 50,000 videos which have been viewed over 50 million times. But whilst these videos are all targeted at youths struggling to come to terms with, or struggling with bullying because of their sexual identity, the message of hope that this campaign brings can be valuable for every single person, regardless of how they identify.
IT GETS BETTER, for people who are too afraid to be themselves in school. The crippling fear of not fitting in amongst your classmates can make you try and become someone that you’re not. It can hold you back from experiencing things that mean something to you and stop you from showing those around you what you are capable of. Whether it happens whilst you are still in school or upon your departure, the strength of individuality is ever-present inside of you. Every single person has the ability to do great and masterful things, the only person that can ever truly hold you back is yourself. Whenever you are ready to reach your highest pinnacle of greatness, you know who to call.
IT GETS BETTER, for people who think that the world is against them. Whilst there is definitely no denying that you will never have one-hundred percent support from the world, why let that stop you? No matter who you are or what you do in this world, there are always going to be critics. But just like every rockstar has a bad review from a critic, every rockstar also has a fan base of people that just want to scream your name for the world to hear. Negative voices are always louder when you are feeling down, but when you find those people that think the world of you, it is so much easier to pick yourself up and show them how truly great you can be.
IT GETS BETTER, for people who just wish they could start again. We have all had our run of bad luck, and there are bound to be things in life that make us feel less than perfect. But the ability to change who we are and what we stand for is forever within our reach. No matter what path we may have strayed onto, or how the pang of regret can make us feel, the power of rebirth and rejuvenation is alive in all of us.
What it all comes down to, is that we can make it better for ourselves, all we have to do is say that enough is enough. Life is for living, and living is so much more enjoyable when we are living the way we want.
